朴槿惠被控與閨蜜崔順實串通向南韓企業勒索數千萬美元，同時被控協助崔順實非法取得政府機密檔案。反對黨說這幾項指控嚴重程度足以構成彈劾理由，她所屬政黨若干成員也表同意。根據民調，南韓主要報紙和大部分民眾也希望她下台。
朴槿惠5年總統任期到2018年初，國會今天以234票通過總統彈劾案，她先遭停職，由總理暫代臨時總統。憲法法院必須就彈劾案做出裁定，如獲得9名法官中6人支持，朴槿惠才會正式遭到彈劾。南韓將接著在60天內選出新總統，這段期間繼續由黃教安代行總統職務。
但是如果憲法法院未達6名法官支持彈劾案，朴槿惠可立即恢復總統職務。
「韓民族新聞」（Hankyoreh）分析指出，鑑於法官的政治傾向和通過彈劾案所需的法官人數，難以指望彈劾案一定過關。如果彈劾案遭否決，朴槿惠成功敗部復活得以免責，南韓恐將進入難以控制的暴動。
韓民族新聞指出，憲法法院裁定程序需時多久無法得知，如為期2到3個月，意味著明年2月或3月做出裁定，那麼總統大選將提前於4月或5月舉行。
另外，朴槿惠若在憲法法院處理彈劾案期間自行辭職，大選亦可能提前。
彭博報導，眼下急迫需求是穩定，全世界難以承擔南韓陷入權力真空。美國正處於不安的權力交接過程，新政府對亞洲的承諾仍有爭議及不確定，北韓政權會試圖測試新就職的美國總統川普（Donald Trump）。
而南韓面臨年輕人失業到龐大家庭債務等一連串益發嚴峻的挑戰，實在承擔不起陷入政治癱瘓的局面。（譯者：中央社羅苑韶）1051209
